Linking of PAN card with Aadhaar card is permitted by the Supreme Court while reading out its judgment on the constitutional validity of Aadhaar. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had expanded the deadline to link PAN card and Aadhaar card to March 31, 2019. The apex court also spoke that Aadhaar is compulsory to apply for a new PAN and file income tax returns (ITR).
As stated by the e-filing website of Income Tax Department on 26 September 2018, there are more than 56 million users whose PAN card is linked with Aadhaar card are registered and more than 23 million users have not yet linked their PAN card to Aadhaar card making them non-registered users. Therefore, if you have not yet linked your Pan card to Aadhar card, it is convenient for you to do it soon. Between the justify time, if you do not do so, your PAN will become invalid. Below are the steps on how to link your PAN card with Aadhaar card.
If at income tax e-filing website, you are already a registered user
If you are already applying tax returns, possibilities are that your PAN card is already linked with Aadhaar card, if you have indicated it while applying for income tax return in the early assessment years. The message will pop up on the screen, ‘Your PAN card is already linked to Aadhaar card of number XXXX1234’.
In case your PAN card is not linked to Aadhaar card then a form will arise where you will be demanded to enter your details including name, gender as per PAN records and date of birth. After that your Aadhaar card number. Click on submit after inserting the captcha code arising on the screen. After the submission, a success message will appear on your screen.
For users who are non- registered
In case you are not interested in doing the registration yourself at the e-filing website, there is another option by which you can link your PAN card and Aadhaar card. A hyperlink has been given at the e-filing website’s homepage and also on the income tax website i.e. http://incometaxindia.gov.in/Pages/default.aspx
Just choose the ‘Link Aadhaar’ on the e-filing website. A new form will arise where you are demanded to enter information including Aadhaar card number, PAN card number, and Name as per the Aadhaar card.
If your Aadhaar card contains only your year of birth, then you must also select the ‘I have the only year of birth in Aadhaar card’ option. Insert the captcha code and select the submit option. After you submitted successfully, a message will appear on your screen displaying that your PAN card is successfully linked to Aadhaar card.
Rest of the methods
a) By sending the PAN service providers an SMS
If you are not able to link your PAN card and Aadhaar card with help of the e-filing website of the department then you can use other methods too, for linking PAN card and Aadhaar card.
Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has offered other methods to link PAN and Aadhaar different than the methods told above, in its notification on the date of June 29, 2017. You can link your PAN card and Aadhaar card by sending a normal SMS. You can send an SMS to both of the PAN service providers including Services Limited (UTIITSL) and NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited or UTI Infrastructure Technology. You can easily send an SMS in a provided format using a keyword to any of the numbers which are 567678 and 56161. UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar><SPACE><10 digit PAN> is the format.
For instance, if your Aadhaar card number is 444433332222 and PAN is BBBRP8888T. Then you are obligated to send SMS to 56161 or 567678 as UIDPAN 444433332222 BBBRP8888T. For this, UTIITSL and NSDL won’t charge you. Whereas, SMS charges as imposed by the mobile operator will be relevant.
b) Linking manually by filing up a form (Annexure-I)
According to the above-mentioned notification, CBDT has offered a manual method too for easing up the issues that taxpayers face in case the person is not able to get rid of the issue of mismatch in the data of Aadhaar card and PAN card via rest of the methods.
You can go to a service centre of PAN service provider, UTIITSL or NSDL. You will be asked to fill in the form of ‘Annexure-I’ along with the bearing documents including the photocopy of PAN card and Aadhaar card.
Other than online services, this service is not free of charge. An individual is obliged to pay an authorized fee to them. The fee charged varies from PAN card to Aadhaar card whether correction of information made in PAN card or Aadhar card while linking them. For any correction in the PAN information, the fee charged is Rs 110, while for correcting Aadhaar information, the authorized fee is Rs 25. Biometric authentication is necessary in case there is a huge mismatch in the data of PAN card and Aadhaar card.
Points to be Noted:
- If while using online methods, an Aadhaar OTP will be obtained in case your name is not the same as mentioned on your PAN card but your date of birth and gender matches. The OTP will be sent to the mobile number which is registered or linked to the Aadhaar card number entered online. You will have to insert that OTP number online to keep going and finish the linking process.
- It is preferable that in case there is a mismatch in the details of PAN card and Aadhaar card you get, it must be corrected before trying to link the two numbers.
